 You are reading this page because you suspect the products of science—the technology it produces—can place you at risk because of the greed of scientists and their corporate sponsors. You are correct. Unfortunately, the details of science are so complex and ever-changing that they are difficult for non-scientists to follow. Worse is the fact that scientists live in their own non-scientific culture. This is critical when evaluating the role of science in such political subjects as the ownership of water. This is a time when US politics are critical to both scientists and non-scientists. The 2000 non-election of George W. Bush as President followed by the September 11, 2001 attack on the US and Bush's declaration of the continuous war against terror means that the 2004 election will determine the course of US history. I am supporting Congressman Dennis J. Kucinich as the candidate with guts enough to make the kind of decisions necessary for the US to resume its resonsibility world's future. In the meantime, you, the public, need to protect yourselves from abuse by scientists. I believe the greatest danger at this time is world starvation from genetically modified food crops. I am publishing this web site to help you understand the culture of scientists which I hope will give you the tools to bring scientists under control and make science safe.
The important tool is in your hand—the mouse to obtain information and send Email to people with power to make changes. The facts scientists have not yet discovered or admitted to as in the above cases can hurt you. Scientists are NOT detached observers of nature. The facts they discover are NOT inherent in the natural phenomena they observe. In fact, the scientific method requires scientists to construct facts by deciding what experiments they should pursue, by making decisions about what they will consider significant, and by deciding how they will describe their observations. These choices are not merely individual or idiosyncratic. They reflect the society in which the scientists live and work. SECRECY is the key to POWER in science, even though scientists proudly proclaim it is the peer review part of secret peer review that keeps scientists honest. Secrecy places the public at risk because scientists avoid stating opinions that might be offensive to other scientists because they could be "blackballed" during secret peer review. PUBLICATION is the life-blood of a scientist. But the control of publication lies in the hands of the scientific societies, thus placing POWER in the hands of Editors and Society officers. DENIAL by scientists places the public at risk. Examine the history of GM—Genetic Engineering in the US, BSE—"mad cow disease" in Europe, and AIDS worldwide for proof of this statement. Any scientist who speaks out against public risk from science or corruption in the scientific community will find himself out of a job, blackballed, and broke. The announcement of the UN world conference planned to address the attitude of scientists states: "science itself is facing difficulties of confidence and investment, as well as those of an ethical nature." My purpose in creating this website is to expose corruption in the scientific community. You can check my credentials as a scientist with publications, Fellow of the prestigious AAAS scientific society, and scientific leader with responsibility for public safety in seed research. In 1978, as a fired and blackballed scientist, I presented a paper at an international meeting describing corruption in science and ways to stop it. My vision involved electronic review and publication open to the public, which now is feasible through the Internet.
